As you may have noticed, I haven't been as available as a clinician, and I wanted to explain why. I juggle four roles: I am an optometrist, a CEO, a business owner, and an advocate for private practice. Over the past few years, I've been increasingly focused on the health of the business by developing our processes, Leadership Team, and Doctor Team. I've also been writing, traveling and lecturing on eye care, which are passions of mine.
I believe that a vibrant life both in and out of clinic is essential for the private practice model to remain strong and viable. While I'm not in the exam room as often as I used to be, I want to assure you that I'm still available to see patients. I will always make time for those who specifically request me. However, don’t skip or delay your annual eye exam! I encourage you to try another one of our compassionate and capable providers, who have availability this week.
Each Associate Optometrist has been recruited, vetted and coached by a Helmus doctor. We practice in a group setting and collaborate daily. Dr. Thanh Tran is decisive, keen and effective. Dr. Thomasy worked for retired ophthalmologist Dr. Bob Miller for three years before joining our Doctor Team in 2019. Dr. Lana Tu, a fellow Davis mom, should be your go-to for pediatrics and myopia management. Our newest addition, Dr. Andrawis Zada, has the confident and easy-going demeanor of a young Dr. Mark Helmus. These doctors take care of me and my family.
A maxim all parents can relate to: “I can’t be everyone at once!” Another important (and major!) role of mine: I’m a mother of two energetic boys, ages five and seven. My children will only be young once. Will I have more available patient care hours when they are older and I’m no longer their favorite? Very likely!
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly.
Warmly,
Julie Helmus, OD
