We all know how modern life has reshaped society — it is impossible to work and socialize without using screens and phones. Unfortunately, there are consequences to that widespread use, and one major impact is on our eyes. The human visual system was not designed for hours and hours of focusing on digital devices up close. Every day patients report dry eye, eye strain, over-stimulation, and headaches secondary to screen time. Thankfully, we have blue lightblocking eyewear that can help improve your quality of life.
Blue light is one of the colors in the visible light spectrum. It is a natural part of our lives and is even present in sunlight. Screens like monitors, televisions, and phones are backlit by LED lights that emit blue light. Blue light has a high intensity and excessive exposure can cause eye strain, discomfort, and may disrupt your sleep-wake cycle. Prolonged screen time will also decrease your natural blink rate, causing dry eye. We advocate for frequent breaks during screen time, and we can also recommend safe artificial tears for when your eyes feel dry.
If you experience some or all of the following symptoms and have a screen-dependent routine, you may be sensitive to blue light:
We want to make your life more comfortable. Many patients request and appreciate blue light glasses. Blue light lenses look like normal glasses, but they include a special filter in the lens that eliminates blue light wavelengths, which may help reduce eye strain and improve your quality of sleep. We frequently recommend computer-specific prescription glasses with a blue blocker for our patients who spend a lot of time on digital devices. Your computer glasses will be designed for the focal distance of your desk set-up; these are a valuable tool within your eyewear wardrobe.
