Optic Atrophy

What You Should Know About Optic Atrophy

The optic nerve is critical to sight. You cannot see it without it. If the optic nerve gets damaged or starts to deteriorate, irreversible damage to your eyesight can occur. It is important that you have the health of your eyes checked on a regular basis. The expert optometrists at Helmus Optometry in Davis, CA, will help you to understand what is going on with your eyes. We will check and monitor the condition of your optic nerve.

.

How the Optic Nerve Helps You to See

Light is focused onto the back inside wall of your eye. This is where the retina is located. Your retina converts the image information contained in the light into information that the brain can understand. The optic nerve, which is attached to the retina, transmits that information to the brain. With a deteriorating or damaged optic nerve, information between your eyes and brain is defective. A complete loss of vision can happen.

What Causes Optic Nerve Atrophy?

Glaucoma: Glaucoma is where the pressure in the eye becomes abnormal. The increased pressure causes deterioration of the optic nerve. In some cases, the optic nerve cannot withstand normal eye pressure.

Congenital: For some people, the optic nerve did not develop properly from birth.

Optic nerve stroke: The blood vessels that feed the optic nerve with oxygen and nutrients become blocked or narrow. This can cause sudden loss of vision.

Tumor: A tumor could be putting pressure on the nerve.

What Are the Symptoms of Optic Atrophy?

  • Blurred vision or reduction of sharp vision
  • The difficulty of peripheral vision
  • Problems with seeing in color

Tests and Treatment of Optic Nerve Atrophy

A comprehensive eye exam is needed to detect and identify the cause of optic atrophy. This includes your medical history, your illnesses, and the medications you are taking. Our eye doctors can look through your eye and examine the condition of your optic nerve. We will test both your peripheral and color vision.

Sadly, there is no effective treatment. Whatever part of the optic nerve is lost will not be recaptured. Early detection can help to keep it from progressing further. Determining the cause is crucial so that the underlying cause can be treated.

Regular Eye Exams Are Crucial to Catch Optic Atrophy in its Early Stages
